Fitch warns of fiscal slippage if govt goes for populist interim budget

💻Jk News info 📰 NEW DELHI, Jan 31: Ahead of BJP-led NDA government presenting the final budget of its tenure, Fitch Ratings Thursday warned of a second consecutive year of fiscal slippage in the event of Finance Minister Piyush Goyal resorting to populist spending to win over lost vote base. The interim budget to be presented Friday could give some indication of the government’s commitment to fiscal consolidation, which is one of the main sensitivities in the sovereign ratings, Fitch said. “Pressure for new expenditure to attract votes, particularly among rural and small-business owner voters, has increased as polls have shown the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is becoming less assured of victory in the general elections. “The BJP has reportedly lost votes in some recent state elections due to rural distress and public concerns over job creation. Targeted cash programmes appear the most likely form of support, as they would avoid downside risks of alternatives, such as the fa...

US Fed keeps interest rate unchanged, says will be ‘patient’

💻Jk News info 📰 WASHINGTON, Jan 30: The Federal Reserve left the key US lending rate unchanged on Wednesday, and said it would be “patient” about making any further changes, in the clearest signal yet the central bank has heeded concerns about the economy. Although the Fed continues to expect continued expansion of the economy and strong jobs growth are the “most likely outcomes,” the statement signaled the growing uncertainty about the outlook. “In light of global economic and financial developments and muted inflation pressures, the committee will be patient as it determines” the timing and need for any further increases, the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee said. In an unusual separate statement, the Fed also said it was prepared to change the pace of reduction of its massive securities holdings, after markets became concerned that the current process was too rigid. The language used in the FOMC statement, keeping the benchmark interest rate in a range of 2.25 perc...

India’s farmer under distress

💻Jk News info 📰 Dr. Sudershan Kumar In recent times, politics has become a game of appeasement which was very well apparent in the recently concluded elections in several states. Various political parties and their leaders try to climb the ladder of power by announcing various populist measures to appease the masses. These lollipops are mostly in the form of providing free electricity, free water, distribution of smart phones, laptops and many others. The most sensitive and sought after issue recently which was abused for the sake of capturing power was the promise of a loan waiver for addressing the distress of farmers . These were announced without contemplating about its repercussions and if these are implemented, they would have a huge bearing on the country’s economy and budget. Even economists have been skeptical about these measures, especially the loan waiver. According to them, announcing sops without proper planning will derail long term fiscal management entailed by fisca...

Congress’ Priyanka plan

💻Jk News info 📰 Anil Anand Uttar Pradesh, the largest state which accounts for 80 Lok Sabha seats, has created a political tsunami of a different variety. First it was the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)-Samajwadi Party (SP) the arch-rivals’ alliance that created ripples in polity beyond UP. And now Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s formal entry into politics as All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Eastern UP with other half of the politically significant state going under the charge of Jyotiraditya Scindia. The two developments have re-established the political significance of UP primarily on account of the highest number of MPs it sends to Lok Sabha but more significantly in setting the political agenda for the entire nation. The BSP-SP alliance was the first trigger in this direction which in fact had paved the way for a bigger explosion when Congress was kept out this arrangement. So, the advent of Priyanka Gandhi on the political scene in pursuit of Congress’ plan ‘B’!...

Ex-MLAs’ Report Card

💻Jk News info 📰 Sir, I would like to appreciate Daily Excelsior for its initiative of carrying out the survey in different constituencies and then bringing out in public domain the report card of MLAs (ex). It is evident that majority of the MLAs are finding their report cards red marked as many of us have hardly seen the faces of our respective MLAs in our area , neither we have seen our grievances getting addressed in this period of 4 years. Now when elections are approaching once again they are going to come out of their cozy mansions to ask for votes. It is suggested that at the end of this survey regarding report cards of ex-MLAs, kindly come up with the ranking order of all the MLAs by selecting some of the parameters concerning the development in the constituencies. The ranking will help people to choose their representative wisely in future and who knows this might bring in the spirit of competition among the MLAs to perform better and secure a good rank. After all democracy...

Border Residents and the Government Apathy

💻Jk News info 📰 Colonel Shiv Choudhary (Retd) In the context of foreign political leadership, a leader may have massive online followers.
