IAF to receive Wing Commander Varthaman at Wagah border post: Sources

💻Jk News info 📰   NEW DELHI: A delegation of IAF team will on Friday receive Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, captured by Pakistan during an aerial combat, at the Wagah border, official sources said. Varthaman’s MiG 21 was shot and he bailed out after bringing down one Pakistani F-16 fighter during a dogfight to repel a Pakistani attack on Wednesday morning. He has been in Pakistan since then. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced in Parliament on Thursday that Varthaman would be released on Friday as a “peace gesture”. Parts of Pakistan’s AMRAAM missile found in Rajouri: Proof shown at defence briefing

💻Jk News info 📰 India presented at a joint briefing on Thursday parts of an AMRAAM missile fired by Pakistani F-16 jets at military installations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri to contradict Islamabad’s claim that it had not used F-16 jets in its aerial strike yesterday. The evidence is crucial to establishing use of the F-16 jets in the offensive since the US, which sold the jets to Islamabad, doesn’t allow these platforms to be used in an offensive posture. The unusual briefing, conducted against the backdrop of the Defence Ministry at Raisina Hill, was addressed by senior officers of the three services, Army, Navy and Air Force. The briefing was as much of an effort to call out Pakistan on its retaliatory strike as it was to assure the country that the defence forces were prepared to meet any eventuality. In between, they also packed in a sharp message for Pakistan.”If they provoke us any further, we are prepared for exigencies”, said Army Maj Gen SS Mahal. “There is ...

China non-committal about move in UN to list Azhar as global terrorist

💻Jk News info 📰 BEIJING: China on Thursday appeared non-committal about its stand on a fresh proposal moved by the US, the UK and France in the UN Security Council to designate Pakistan-based terror group JeM’s chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. China, a close ally of Pakistan, has consistently blocked moves first by India and later by the US, the UK and France to designate Azhar as a global terrorist by the 1267 Committee by putting technical holds. Asked whether China will block the move to designate Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Azhar as a global terrorist – a listing that will subject him to global travel ban, asset freeze and arms embargo – Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang almost reiterated Beijing’s oft-repeated stand at a media briefing here. “As we have said on many occasions, the 1267 committee of the UN Security Council has clear norms on the listing of terrorist organisations or individuals and relevant procedures,” he said. China will continue to take a resp...

Opposition alliance will send country to ICU: Modi

💻Jk News info 📰 NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday pitched the upcoming Lok Sabha polls as an election to fulfill people’s aspirations after his Government “fulfilled” their necessities, as he cautioned the BJP rank and file against any “smallest lapse” that may result in a setback like in 2004. The Opposition’s proposed grand alliance, which he called ‘mahamilavat’ (highly adulterated), will send the country to ICU (intensive care unit), Modi said, referring to “corruption and scams” under the previous UPA rule and describing the combine as a mixture of “oil and water” that will leave them useless. In a video-interaction with BJP workers and sympathisers from across the country, he referred to the “experience of Atal ji” to say a smallest lapse may stop the fast-paced development under his Government and “ease of corruption” and scams will rule again. The first BJP-led NDA Government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee had suffered an unexpected loss in the 2004 polls. M...

Air-Strikes Minus Diplomacy

Dr.Zeeshan Khan     Once Ralph Waldo Emerson-an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century said,”For every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind.”Truth they say is the first casualty in war, in some cases in peace time too. But yelling and screaming TV anchors painted a picture in India of such precise details as though they were watching everything from the cockpits of Mirage planes. Media is not always helpless or bereft of resources to independently verify the truth. It was difficult to find a journalist on Tuesday on Indian TV who would be asking questions and scrutinising the narrative from both sides instead of giving lectures in patriotism from the pulpit their newsroom has become but with the exception of certain liberal and literate voices. It was the rightwing leader L.K. Advani who captured the state of India’s mainstream media in his memoirs. He recall...

IPRI National Dialogue: Mainstreaming Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tribal Districts and Gilgit-Baltistan

“Mainstreaming of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tribal Districts (KPTD), formerly FATA, into National/Political Architecture: Challenges and Solutions” & “Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Concerns, Reservations and Aspirations: Mainstreaming GB”   The biggest issue in mainstreaming Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tribal Districts (KPTD) into the national/political architecture is implementation on the ground. Rebuilding of damaged infrastructure needs to be completed on priority basis. Awareness among policy-makers regarding local sensitivities and culture are need of the hour, as well as exhaustive consultations with the local population. Majority of FATA inhabitants are dependent on farming, therefore, channelizing water for agriculture in the form of small dams, is needed. More than cross-border trade, strict border management over the short- to medium term is more pressing in order to deny cross-border movement of terrorists as the ongoing period of consolidation in FATA, does not warrant any new ph...
