Pak shelling kills woman in Gurez sector
SRINAGAR : A woman was killed and a Health department employee was injured, after Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire and targeted the forward military post and civilian area at the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez sector at north Kashmir district of Bandipora, official sources said here on Wednesday.
They said after shelling at Tangdhar and Keran, Pakistani troops opened another front and resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate shelling from across the LoC in Gurez sector, on late Tuesday night. The Indian troops also retaliated and targeted the Pak forward posts, they added.
Sources said a woman, identified as Rehme Begun, resident of Dassi Bagtore and a Health department employee, identified as Manzoor Ahmad, resident of Naidkhai, Sumbal, were injured.
The injured were rushed to a local hospital, where Rehme was referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment, they said, adding that the woman succumbed on Wednesday morning.
Sources said since the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan in 2003, Pakistani troops have been shelling forward position in Kupwara, Baramull and Gurez, targeting civilian and forward posts at LoC.
However, they said Pak troops are resorting to firing and shelling at LoC, to provide a cover to militants to sneak into this side from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), where a large number of trained militants are camping in launch pads to sneak into this side, before the infiltration routes are closed due to snowfall.
