New battery design can charge an electric car in 10 minutes

💻Jk News info 📰 WASHINGTON: Ten minutes charging time to add 200 miles of driving range: scientists in the US have claimed a technological breakthrough that could resolve one of the key concerns surrounding all-electric vehicles. Writing in the journal Joule on Wednesday, researchers at The Pennsylvania State University said that such a speedy charge rate required a battery to rapidly take in 400 kilowatts of energy. Current generation vehicles are not capable of this feat as it risks the lithium plating, the formation of metallic lithium around the anode, which would severely deteriorate battery life. To get around this constraint, the researchers raised the temperature of their experimental battery to 60 degrees Celsius during the charge cycle, then lowered it back down as it was used. What this does is “limit the battery’s exposure to the elevated charge temperature, thus generating a very long cycle life,” said senior author Chao-Yang Wang, a mechanical engineer at The Pennsy...

‘Green inhalers’ can drastically cut down carbon footprint and med costs: Study

💻Jk News info 📰 LONDON: Switching to ‘greener inhalers’ can lead large cut down on carbon emissions, and may also reduce drug costs with the use of less expensive alternative brands, according to a study. Looking at the prescription data from England in 2017, researchers, including those from the University of Cambridge in the UK, collated the carbon footprint data on inhalers—commonly used for conditions such as asthma—and compared the financial and environmental costs of different inhalers. The study, published in the BMJ, noted that the commonly used metered dose inhalers (MDI) — that delivers a measured amount of medication as a mist patients can inhale—contained the propellant gas hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) which is a potent greenhouse gas. The researchers found that about 50 million inhalers were prescribed in England in 2017, of which nearly 70 per cent were metered-dose inhalers. According to the researchers, MDIs contributed the equivalent of almost 4 per cent of the global...

Internationalising the Kashmir issue

Karan Thapar   Now that the visit of European Union parliamentarians to Kashmir has ended its time to assess what it achieved. Was it a clever gambit that could change the discourse in the European parliament or was it a foolish risk that has left egg splattered on many Indian faces? Let’s attempt an answer by analysing its different but significant parts. First, only 23 EU MPs visited the Valley. Four chose not to. These 23 did so in their individual capacity as the European Union Mission in Delhi has made clear. They were drawn from parties like France’s National Rally, Germany’s AFD, UK’s Brexit, Italy’s Forza Italia and Poland’s Law and Justice Party. These are right-wing parties best known for their anti-immigrant stand, which often means they’re anti-muslim. Equally importantly, these parties do not represent the political mainstream in their countries. They’re minority voices. However one MP, Chris Davies, a Liberal Democrat from Britain, says he was disinvited when h...
