Dense fog, cold wave grip Jammu, flights cancelled

JAMMU: Amid cold wave conditions, dense fog on Monday gripped the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory while flights were cancelled at Jammu airport due to poor visibility.

A blanket of fog early morning on Monday gripped the Jammu region thus bringing routine life to a standstill.

The markets open late from scheduled timings while vehicles were seen plying at snail’s pace as preventive measure.

However, all government and private schools from today were closed for winter vacations till January 8 while the Central Government run schools were already observing winter break from November 24.

Meanwhile, an official at Jammu Airport said that due to poor visibility, no flight arrived or departed from here adding that the passengers faced hardships due to cancellation of flights.

The temperature also dipped in Jammu region due to which the harsh cold conditions have effected the life. A weather on Friday said that the Jammu district observed minimum temperature 2.4 degree Celsius and the maximum was 14.3 degrees.

Banihal and Batote areas of Ramban district recorded minimum minus 1.6 and 0.3 degrees respectively and the maximum was 17.4 and 16.0 respectively.

Katra recorded maximum temperature 14.5 degrees and minimum 4.4 degrees, Bhaderwah recorded maximum temperature 13.9 degrees and minimum minus 0.3 and Kathua recorded maximum 12.6 degrees and minimum was 4.0 degrees.

The official said that the departure and arrival of 16 flights was cancelled from Jammu on Friday due bad weather which included Delhi-Srinagar, Delhi-Jammu, Delhi-Srinagar, Srinagar-Jammu-Delhi, Delhi-Jammu-Delhi, Delhi-Jammu-Srinagar, Srinagar-Jammu-Delhi, Leh-Jammu-Leh, Srinagar-Jammu-Srinagar, Jammu-Bombay, Jammu-Gwalior, Bombay-Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Jammu-Srinagar.
