GENEVA: The United Nations’ top official for human rights has expressed concern over the situation in India-held Kashmir as well as the escalating anti-Muslim violence in New Delhi where a number of people have been killed during peaceful protests against a controversial law. Speaking at the Human Rights Council, Michelle Bachelet, the UN high commissioner for human rights, appealed to Indian leaders to take steps to prevent violence. “In India more broadly, the Citizenship Amendment Act adopted last December is of great concern,” she told the 47-member Geneva-based council. “Indians in huge numbers, and from all communities, have expressed in a mostly peaceful manner, their opposition to the act, and support for the country’s long tradition of secularism,” Ms. Bachelet said. The high commissioner expressed concern over reports of police inaction in the face of attacks against Muslims by Hindu groups, as well as previous reports of excessive use of force by police against peaceful ...

Trump nominates controversial ally as intel chief

💻Jk News info 📰 Washington, Feb 29: US President Donald Trump announced Republican lawmaker John Ratcliffe as his intelligence chief Friday, sparking fresh controversy over a crucial position that has lacked a permanent office holder for months. The 53-year-old Trump loyalist was nominated as director of national intelligence after Dan Coats stepped down in July last year, but withdrew from consideration after strong criticism of his credentials from Democrats and a tepid response from key Republicans. Trump instead named counterterrorism expert Joseph McGuire as acting director, overseeing the 17 agencies of the intelligence community including the CIA and National Security Agency. But he forced McGuire out on February 20 after a senior intelligence official told Congress in a closed briefing that the Russians were again supporting Trump’s bid for re-election. The revolving door continued to spin as Trump appointed another loyalist, Richard Grenell, two weeks ago. But the former...

Trump wins key court case on snub of Congressional subpoenas

💻Jk News info 📰 Washington, Feb 29: The White House won a key victory for presidential power Friday when an appeals court rejected a lawsuit over President Donald Trump blocking his former legal advisor from honoring a Congressional subpoena. The Washington appeals court ruled two-to-one that the US judicial branch has no power to decide whether Trump could prevent former White House counsel Don McGahn from testifying in an investigation of the president by the House Judiciary Committee. McGahn had been called last year to testify in the impeachment investigation of Trump, particularly on allegations that Trump illegally obstructed the Russia political interference probe. But McGahn refused to appear on Trump’s instruction, with the White House citing Trump’s executive privileges. The issue provoked a rare constitutional showdown in which the judiciary was asked to rule on the power struggle between the two other branches of government — the executive and legislative. The House ...

Regulators move to fine telecoms for selling location data

💻Jk News info 📰 Washington, Feb 29: US regulators moved to impose fines Friday against the nation’s four major wireless carriers for selling location data of customers without their consent. The Federal Communications Commission proposed fining T-Mobile more than USD 91 million; AT&T some USD 57 million; Verizon USD 48 million, and Sprint USD 12 million. The wireless firms were accused of having disclosed mobile network user location data to a third party without authorisation from customers, the FCC said. The FCC began an investigation after a report that a sheriff in Missouri used a “location-finding service” operated by a prison communications services company called Securus to track whereabouts of people, including a judge and law enforcement officers. The carriers provided access to customer location data to “aggregators” who then resold information to services such as Securus, according to the regulator. “American consumers take their wireless phones with them wherever...

Exposure to air pollution linked with poor kidney health: Study

💻Jk News info 📰 Washington, Feb 28: Living in areas with higher levels of air pollution is associated with an increased risk of developing kidney diseases, according to a study. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US said the findings may be especially important for parts of the world with higher air pollution, such as India and China. It is known that breathing in air pollution can have detrimental health effects beyond the lungs, but few studies have shown how it impacts the kidneys, which act as filters for the blood, they said. The study, published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), examined information on 10,997 adults across four sites in the US who were followed from 1996-1998 through 2016. The researchers estimated the monthly average levels of tiny particles of air pollution — called fine particulate matter — based on participants’ home addresses. Researchers noted that fine particulate matter comes from a va...

‘How caloric restriction may slow ageing decoded’

💻Jk News info 📰 Los Angeles, Feb 28: Restricting food-calorie intake may help reduce levels of inflammation throughout the body, delay the onset of age-related diseases, and increase lifespan, according to a study which provides the most detailed report to date of the cellular effects of a calorie-restricted diet in rats. While the benefits of caloric restriction have been widely studied, the new results, published in the journal Cell, showed how it protects against ageing by shedding light on the chemical processes happening at the cell-level under the diet. “We already knew that calorie restriction increases life span, but now we’ve shown all the changes that occur at a single-cell level to cause that,” said Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, study senior author from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in the US. “This gives us targets that we may eventually be able to act on with drugs to treat ageing in humans,” Belmonte said. The researchers said caloric restriction has bee...

‘No one cares’: Locked-in Wuhan residents adapt to find food

💻Jk News info 📰 Beijing, Feb 28: The lockdown of Guo Jing’s neighbourhood in Wuhan — the city at the heart of China’s new coronavirus epidemic — came suddenly and without warning. Unable to go out, the 29-year-old is now sealed inside her compound where she has to depend on online group-buying services to get food. “Living for at least another month isn’t an issue,” Guo told AFP, explaining that she had her own stash of pickled vegetables and salted eggs. But what scares her most is the lack of control — first, the entire city was sealed off, and then residents were limited to exiting their compound once every three days. Now even that has been taken away. Guo is among some 11 million residents in Wuhan, a city in central Hubei province that has been under effective quarantine since January 23 as Chinese authorities race to contain the epidemic. Since then, its people have faced a number of tightening controls over daily life as the death toll from the virus swelled to over 2,5...

VW strikes ‘dieselgate’ compensation deal with German consumersFrankfurt Am Main,

💻Jk News info 📰 Feb 28: German giant Volkswagen has struck a compensation deal with domestic consumer groups representing owners of cars caught up in its “dieselgate” emissions cheating scandal, a court said Friday. “The consumer federation and Volkswagen have come to a comprehensive agreement,” in a first-of-its-kind collective lawsuit brought by around 400,000 diesel car drivers, the Brunswick higher state court said, just weeks after talks between the two sides broke down in acrimony. Consumer federation VZBV said it would reveal details of the agreement at a 1:00 pm (1200 GMT) press conference. The two sides earlier this month fell out in public after agreeing in principle on 830 million euros (USD 916.3 million) in payouts for German diesel car drivers. VW said at the time the talks failed because of “disproportionate” fee demands from VZBV’s lawyers. But the consumer group said the money was needed to set up “a transparent, trustworthy and secure system” to actually pay out...

Kashmir is still international dispute Under UN charter Chapter 6 : Shireen Mazari at Geneva

Geneva (KW): Pakistan’s Minister for Human Rights Dr. Shireen M Mazari said that Kashmir is not India’s integral part, rather, Kashmir is an internationally recognised dispute. ‘India’s position that Kashmir is its internal issue is not based on any reality at all’ she said while addressing the side event on the 43rd session of United Nations Human Rights Council. The side event titled “Siege Continues In Jammu and Kashmir” was organised by the International Human Rights Association of American Minorities (IHRAAM). Dr. Mazari said that India took Kashmir issue to UNSC under chapter 6 of the UN charter, not chapter 7. This means, she said, India accepted that Kashmir was an international dispute. “Had India gone to UNSC under chapter 7 of the UN charter, it would have accused Pakistan of aggression and so on, but it didn’t do so”. She also said UNSC had a very clear position that the only option to resolve the Kashmir dispute was free and fair plebiscite. ‘Qualitatively the situa...
