N Korea delays removal of S Korean facilities over outbreak

💻Jk News info 📰 SEOUL, Jan 31:North Korea has postponed plans to tear down South Korean-made hotels and other facilities at the North’s Diamond Mountain resort to prevent the spread of a new virus that has reached the South after sickening thousands in China. The North’s decision, which was conveyed to the South through a fax message late Thursday, came as it intensifies precautions against the outbreak, including blocking tourists, reducing flights and mobilizing screening efforts in a nationwide campaign state media described as a matter of “national existence.” North Korea had earlier demanded South Korea send workers to Diamond Mountain at an agreed upon date to clear out the facilities. The South also on Thursday withdrew dozens of officials and workers from an inter-Korean liaison office in the North Korean border town of Kaesong, which the Koreas agreed to temporarily shut down until the outbreak is controlled. “At around 11 PM yesterday, North Korea through a direct telep...

In boost for Trump, key Republican senator opposes calling witnesses

💻Jk News info 📰 WASHINGTON, Jan 31: A key Republican senator said late Thursday that he would oppose calling new witnesses at Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, paving the way for the possible acquittal of the president by the Senate as early as Friday. Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said he would vote “no” when the question of calling further witnesses at the trial is considered on Friday. Four Republican votes were needed to introduce new witnesses into the proceedings, and Alexander had been considered one of a handful of Republican senators who might support the motion. Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine said she would support the call for witnesses, and Utah Senator Mitt Romney has said he was “very likely” to do so. Another wavering Republican — Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — has said she will announce her decision Friday morning. Republicans hold a 53 to 47 seat edge in the Senate, and four Republicans needed to side with the Democrats for new witnesses to be intr...

US gender wage gap narrowed significantly since 1980: Study

💻Jk News info 📰 WASHINGTON, Jan 31:American women are catching up to men, at least in terms of wages, according to a study published on Thursday showing the pay gap between the sexes has narrowed considerably since 1980. Wage gains for women have been driven by the rapid increase in jobs requiring “social” skills and higher skills, such as critical thinking, where women now represent a majority, according to the report by the Pew Research Center, an independent American research institute. In less than 40 years, the average hourly wages of women have jumped 45 percent, to USD 22 dollars in 2018 from USD 15, while pay for men increased 14 percent in that period. But men’s wages remain above what women earn at USD 26 an hour, and women still comprise a smaller share of the workforce. “The growing presence of women in higher-skill occupations has contributed to more rapid wage growth for them in recent decades compared with men, and this helped to narrow the gender wage gap,” the re...

Brexit Day: Businesses see promising India-UK ties ahead

💻Jk News info 📰 LONDON, Jan 31: The UK will officially become a non-member of the European Union (EU) from Friday night, a certainty welcomed by Indian businesses operating in the UK as well as British businesses keen to expand into the Indian market. The official transition period from Saturday until the end of December means status quo in terms of much of the trade and business operations vis-a-vis the UK and EU, but what does change is Britain’s free hand to strike new deals and partnerships around the world. Leading trade organisations and Indian entrepreneurs see this as an exciting time for the India-UK trade and economic partnership to be taken to a new level. “There’s no question that India will be a vital trading partner as the UK charts a new future outside the EU. The golden opportunities for British firms in India play to the best strengths of UK plc – from infrastructure to healthcare to FinTech,” said Lord Karan Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer and Vice-President of t...

How long will this country tolerate?

💻Jk News info 📰 Shiban Khaibri Over optimism, very often oversimplifies the truth and the problem is to see reality as it is and the reality is that such conditions and atmosphere can be currently seen in the country which really aches and disturbs. How can , therefore, one brush aside the alarming situation in the country , if it is said that the same is tried to be made akin to pre 1947 conditions, it won’t be any hyperbole when Muslim League, intoxicated after winning more than 89 per cent of the Muslim seats in the 1946 provincial elections to elect members of the legislative councils of British Indian provinces , claimed to be the sole representative of Indian Muslims. In the same way, decks are attempted to be cleared for creating fissures and seditious feelings and even open threatening like by a “learned” scholar – former AMU students Union President FaizulHasan saying, “Look at the Muslims in India , from the year 1947 until now , they have shown a lot of patience , if peop...

Crimes against women

💻Jk News info 📰 Ram Rattan Sharma Woman in today’s world has created a distinct place for her self . In India , women were respected even in Ancient times. The Vedas and the epics have upheld the equality of men and women. During the medieval period, the position of women deteriorated. The dowry system, Sati and Purdah system downgraded women. The British brought along with them western education. This led to the empowerment of women. After Independence, sadly, crimes against women have taken varied forms. These include female feticide or infanticide, dowry deaths, eve-teasing, molestation, abuse at work place, domestic violence and rape. The world health organization has prepared a world report on violence and health. Even in a developed society like the USA the statistics on the women, victims of violence are alarming. Nearly 22 percent of women in the USA have reportedly been physically assaulted by an intimate partner or beaten at least once. In a national survey, 14.8 percent ...

Declaring Dal Lake area as eco-sensitive

💻Jk News info 📰 Not to speak of doing ‘wonders’ in retrieving dying Dal Lake from its present state of affairs of health, even a draft resolution to declare the world famous Dal Lake in Kashmir as eco-sensitive zone could not become a reality thanks to the frugality in the requisite efforts to that end by the Committee of Officers constituted for the purpose. We are frequently wondering through these lines that hardly do important decisions take place in majority of sensitive cases unless court intervention as the last resort was not made and it is equally astonishing in the instant case that despite the High Court continuously monitoring all aspects related to saving this Lake and preventing it from getting worse, things at the administrative levels are not at all moving. Equally, it is wondered that the people of the area, the lovers of nature and eco- environment are not protesting effectively against half-baked, insufficient and indifferent measures of the UT administration and ...

Our education system needs to be self-reliant and globally competitive. This will only be possible when the emerging technology trends are imbibed into the education pattern of the country,” she said. The government must take initiatives such as allocating bigger spending on education and push digitalisation in the education sector in the upcoming budget, she maintained. AGAIN IT IS FEBRUARY

ALI SUKHANVER Why do the people of Pakistan observe the 5 th February as a Kashmir Solidarity Day every year; it is a frequently asked questions. The fact of the matter is that it is not only the 5 th February but each and every day in that month is a Kashmir Solidarity because every day of February has a new story of cruelty and brutality to share with us. The cruel judicial murder of Afzal Guru, brutal hanging of Maqbool Bhatt, burning of the innocent passengers of Samjhota Express and above all the Massacre in Gujarat; February always proved very callous.  Maqbool Bhatt was the first victim to February’s brutality. He was one of the most prominent leaders striving for freedom and liberty of the Indian Occupied Kashmir. If today, the movement for the liberation of Kashmir is still alive, it is because of Maqbool Bhatt’s fiery speeches, charismatic guidance and the seed of desire for freedom he sowed in the hearts of Kashmiri youth. He was accused of killing a CID officer...
